The Highland Clearances, which reached their peak in the 1820s and’30s are well known as one of the darkest chapters in Scottish history. But the process of large-scale eviction actually began in another part of the country, Lowland Scotland,, many years before. Between 1760 and 1830 tens of thousands of people-significantly more than were later exiled from the Highlands-were forcible removed from the land to make way for livestock and crops.
