As I watched David Cameron announce his resignation on the morning of the
\n24th of June, the words of an old childhood game came to mind. Do you
\nremember playing Hide and Seek? When you were about to be caught, you
\nquickly crossed your fingers and said “keys no het”. That is exactly what
\nCameron was doing after the EU Referendum result. To put it another way, in
\nwords I often heard as the social worker at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court – it
\nwisnae me, I wisnae there, a big boy did it and run away” That “big boy”
\nwas of course Boris, and run away he surely did. It soon became clear that
\nnone of the boys involved in the “merry jape” that was the Leave campaign,
\nwere going to take responsibility for the (Eton) mess they had got us into!<\/p>\n
Thank heavens for Nicola, she hit the ground running. Scotland had voted to
\nremain in the EU and she acted immediately to protect Scotland’ interests.
\nNicola called for reassurance for the other EU nationals living and working
\nin Scotland. To their shame, the Westminster Government have refused to
\nrecognise the position in which these people now find themselves. It would
\nappear that they are but mere bargaining chips in future negotiations.
\nNicola tabled a successful motion in the Scottish Parliament to explore all
\noptions for Scotland amid the chaos created by the Brexit vote. She secured
\nthe support of 4 of the 5 parties at Holyrood (The shell-shocked Tories sat
\non their hands!) She took Scotland’s case to the centre of Europe and in so
\ndoing, achieved not only good will, but raised our nation’s profile across
\nthe globe.
\nIf you think this is an exaggeration, let me give you this wee personal
\ncameo. You all know the story – a 16 year old girl from our village chapped
\non my door during the 1987 General Election campaign. I told the story ad
\nnauseam to the UK media during Nicola’s election as First Minister. But once
\nmore I am basking in her reflected glory, only this time, it is the
\nInternational Media who are chapping on my door. I have given interviews
\nwith Reuters and Bloomberg and have been contacted by many more. Boy has
\nNicola put Scotland on the map!<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, back at Westminster, we have now been allocated Theresa May as
\nPrime Minister. To paraphrase Rhett Butler,” frankly my dear, I don’t give a
\ndamn” (younger readers can Google it!) Seriously, my gut tells me that
\nScotland is now, at best, semi-detached from the goings-on at Westminster.
\nEven the hand to hand combat in Labour’s fight to the death is of but
\npassing interest. Poor Angela gave a Press Conference and nobody came! The
\nspeed at which HMS Britannia is sinking takes my breath away. While London
\nre-arranges the deck chairs, Scotland is more united than I have ever seen –
\nand I have been around a long time!<\/p>\n
The game plan has changed, all bets are off. Scotland’s politicians of all
\nshades know that and are moving their positions towards the inevitable. The
\nTories in Scotland are, of course, between a rock and a hard place. Having
\nrun around Scotland 2 months ago claiming to be the party of the union,
\ngathering the remaining pro-union votes from deepest blue to brightest
\norange, they managed to scrape into a poor second place at Holyrood.
\nRemember another Referendum where we were told by Ruth Davidson – vote No to
\nkeep Scotland in the EU? Run that over us again Ruth! However even Ruth
\nhas conceded that she would not block another Independence Referendum. That
\nis a step in the right direction and probably about as far as the entrenched
\nTories can go. My guess is they will go down with that sinking ship.<\/p>\n
However, in the last couple of weeks we have seen so many No voters coming
\ntowards Independence. We must welcome them with open arms. I know that
\nthis is a big ask, fellow nationalists. We all bear the scars of campaigns
\nfought bitterly over the years – some of my scars are over 50 years old!
\nBut the future of Scotland is at stake. The more we can unite as a nation
\nand achieve the support of those who, in the past, opposed Independence, the
\nmore certain we can be that Scotland will remain among the Nations of Europe
\n– a proud and Independent country again.<\/p>\n
I will end with the words of Winnie Ewing (Europe’s beloved Madame Ecosse)
\non winning the Hamilton by-election in 1967 – “Stop the world, Scotland
