So Gordon Brown has risen to the surface yet again.  Bless his wee cotton socks, for “making the UK work for Scotland and the Scottish people.”  He had years to make Labour work for Scotland and all who live and work here, but failed.  So why does Gogs think he has all the answers?  Well it could be he has fallen out of love with Right Wing politics, or possibly a little envious of Nicola Sturgeon’s popularity, or just maybe, he’s seen the light as far as the little idea called Independence just might be not just a ritual chant by the pesky Nats, butRead More →

I’m not sure what planet they are on, but as they sit and congratulate themselves on reinvention yet again thousands sit freezing and hungry. Watching The Omen tonight it mentions “the devils child will rise up in the world of politics.”  The question is, which one? There are many components to the destruction the Tories have inflicted on us all. Power, greed, revolution, diversion and – much worse – sheer blind ignorance. To turn their backs on the deprived in the country, and in the last few weeks the number has multiplied,  without even questioning the incomprehensible mini budget which set the balls rolling towardsRead More →

Well a momentous few weeks in world and local history.  My job as an SNP councillor is to help everyone in the Ward, but wear my Party hat when the time is right.  However, the fact that Queen Elizabeth Second died peacefully in Scotland and the Tories died violently in Westminster illustrates our late sovereign had more dignity in death than our reigning government in the capital has had in life.  But the difference with her representing the people, irrespective of your views on monarchy, is hers was duty and our honourable friends in the other palace has always been about avoiding it. There areRead More →

Having seen and heard the two horse race at Perth it made me wonder that if they had been saddled and ridden over jumps, they might have performed better.  Can’t think what odds they would have attracted but the fact is, if they were from a decent stable they would have been sent off possibly to be ideal companions for abandoned donkeys, as opposed to the other way round, or indeed, languishing in the shadows of a glue factory.  If they had any pride, or understanding how the Scottish people think, or why we are wondering how this race is to end, most would sayRead More →

I have to admit I’ve been partying with a cat, not just any ordinary cat, a cat with a tale.  Now they say animals of the feline kind have nine lives, according to Larry, he’s had more like ninety nine.  After a few whiskas and water, he spilt the milk.  It seems his flat mate was the culprit and not poor old Larry.  He admits he did party, he did do some molly, he did overhear official secrets and said spread ‘em in exchange for a new sofa for his comfort.  He was accused of picking up birds outside the office, but he said he let them all go, tooRead More →

Photo credit: Ian Bell At this time, we Borderers celebrate who we are, what we are and where we have been, be it far far away.  Common Riding are to us what every local celebration in every Scottish community means to them, only this is pash off the stratosphere.   No celebration anywhere is as colourful, emotion filled and our royalty are hand picked from the oor ain faimlies.  This being a honour which is fulfilled with great decorum.  It’s also a great excuse to buy a new hat!   We know how to party but we know how to remember and respect our past.  For thoseRead More →

Well that’s the elections over and I managed to get myself elected and oust a Tory.  It was a strange campaign because there was no door knocking with us as Covid is still rife here in the Borders.  But a lot of online discussions with voters.  The main thoughts were the Boris effect had angered a lot of people but the rising cost of food and energy was really the critical worry.   As so many said, why are we in Scotland suffering fuel poverty when we are rich in wind, hydro, oil and gas?  Why has steel jumped from £600 to £2k when we have closed steel works inRead More →

Well, every day is an adventure when tracking the goings on at Westminster.  Our Prime Minister has not covered himself with glory, or led any kind of example.  I buried my husband exactly one year ago.  At 63 too young, and although he was fighting prostate cancer it was Covid which ended his life.  We were allowed only 20 people including the funeral director and staff.  For a man who was so well liked, involved in rugby and motor sport and loved life, his departure from his community was sad, and his passing without friends and family was cruel. So you can understand, like soRead More →

Anyone who endured bad weather through the last few days knows community is everything. It’s bad enough being cold and wild outside but having no access to food and heat indoors is another matter.  It always amazes me, but shouldn’t, the kindness of so many who battle through wind, rain and snow to attend the needs of others.  Scotland has its own weather system which changes by the hour.  For much of the Winter we are in dark skies.  The increase in energy costs has a greater effect on us yet we produce so much green energy.  We appear to be at the mercy ofRead More →

Watching COP26, and the hypocrisy I suspect will be much discussed after the scheduled benefits.  We all have a duty to curtail emissions, but how many of us actually go through the motions.  I would love to buy an electric car and ditch my diesel, but try being a pensioner and asking for a bank loan! However, few of us have the world watching what we do and whether you’re a world leader, broadcaster or weel kent face, it’s hard to hide the differences yet hard not to be frustrated by the double standards of the wealthy nations dictating to the poor, we all mayRead More →
