As a pioneer socialist he advocated, and campaigned for; the emancipation of women, trade union rights, national insurance, free education and public ownership. In his day these aims were considered to be hopelessly utopian. His arguments are still relevant today.
In his long and eventful life two themes run through with absolute consistency; his sympathy and support for the aspirations of the oppressed and exploited of all races and his advocacy for autonomy for all small nations, particularly independence for Scotland.
